Anthropic just dropped Opus 5. And this might be the most important model release of the year. 🤯
Not because it's the smartest model alive. Fable 5 and Mythos are still ahead on raw intelligence.
But because of what it does for the price.
Opus 5 performs within 0.5% of Fable 5 on coding benchmarks. At half the cost per task.
On ARC-AGI 3 where models have to solve problems they've never seen before Opus 5 scores 3x higher than the next best model. Three times.
On business automation tasks, even at its lowest effort setting, Opus 5 passes more tasks than any other model at max effort.
But here's the story that got me.
Anthropic gave Opus 5 a drawing of a machine part and asked it to recreate it as a 3D model. But they intentionally gave it no way to view the drawing.
So Opus 5 built its own computer vision pipeline from scratch. Pulled the geometry from raw pixels. Reconstructed the full part. Repeatedly. No other model could solve it after five attempts.
It didn't ask for help. It didn't say "I can't view this file." It built the tool it needed and finished the job.
Same price as Opus 4.8. 25 output per million tokens. Available right now on all paid plans.
And somehow it's also their most aligned model ever. Lowest deceptive behavior. Strongest adherence to their constitution. Better safety scores than Fable 5.
Smarter. Cheaper. Safer. That's not supposed to happen at the same time.\n\nQT @claudeai: Introducing Claude Opus 5.

The billion-dollar question hanging over OpenAI and Anthropic
"The billion-dollar question is whether these two foundation models can maintain their growth trajectory , which is starting to become profitable, at least for Anthropic , in the face of all this open-weight competition.
If they can hold it for even another one or two years, everything's fine.
But when your 80% customer slows down, all bets are off." @rodriscoll\n\nQT @HarryStebbings: 1. Should Chinese open models be banned? 2. Will Anthropic and OpenAI hit their targets in 2027?
These are honestly the two biggest questions right now that we discuss in the only show you need to listen to every week with @jasonlk and @rodriscoll
My notes below:
- Why the 10x Price Cut of Chinese Open Models Is an Enterprise Security Trap
Chinese open models like Kimi and Qwen are driving the search for cheaper intelligence. A 10x cost cut has pushed regulated enterprises to run more error-catching supervisor models, increasing token usage by 2.5x. But it also creates unprovable data export and leakage risks, leaving CIOs with a painful tradeoff between cost and security.
- Why the Low-Cost, Open-Weight LLM Layer Is a Brutal Margin Trap for US Startups
Massive valuations for Chinese open-weight models raise a hard question: is low-cost AI a good standalone business? US giants have left a vacuum for much cheaper intelligence, but much of the advantage comes from distillation, which faces legal hurdles in the US. That leaves providers exposed to brutal margin compression.
- Why Turning Down a $6BN Acquisition Offer Is a Sucker Bet for Most Founders
OpenRouter leaking sale talks at a 6 billion valuation is savvy as Ramp, Databricks, and others launch competing routing features. Private liquidity windows are rare, and exiting before a feature becomes commoditized is often optimal. Turning down life-changing cash only makes sense if a founder is certain they can build a 10x larger company.
- Why Hypergrowth Inference Providers Must Vertically Integrate to Survive the CapEx Wars
Fireworks hitting a $17.5 billion valuation shows the best AI investments are still in infrastructure. Massive developer demand has turned low-margin compute brokering into a strong business with mid-30s gross margins. To avoid commodification, hypergrowth inference providers must vertically integrate into their own data centers.
- Why the Entire US Stock Market Is Held Hostage by the 2026 AI Growth Rate
The tech ecosystem and hyperscaler CapEx trajectory depend on OpenAI and Anthropic’s growth rates into 2026. Frontier models face pricing pressure from cheap open-weight alternatives but remain trapped by real inference costs and massive training investments. If growth slows or forced price cuts erode margins, the market dislocation could be severe.
- Why Stripe Swallowing PayPal Is a High-Stakes Bet on Legacy Tech Rationalization
Stripe partnering with Advent to take PayPal private would show how attractive late-stage scale has become for capital deployment. While absorbing a legacy giant growing at 7% could slow Stripe’s standalone growth, it would instantly expand its processing footprint. The deal would mark a historic passing of the torch from legacy payments to the modern upstart.

RT @sairahul1: This is nuts.
Mark Cuban just said something every young person should hear.
AI agents are going to run through every small and mid-size business in the country.
Not a single one of those owners will know how to build them.
His advice: learn Claude. Learn agentic workflows. Just learn AI and how it works.
Then go to these businesses and help them — because they won't know how to do any of this.
They have money to spend. They have deep problems.
They don't have you.
But first you need to know how to build agents.

Jefferies Raises 640 from $515 - Buy
Analyst comments: "AMD’s Advancing AI Day delivered on all fronts, with clear leadership in servers, while AI has become much more real with two additional key customers and a roadmap that potentially puts AMD ahead of $NVDA.
Helios will begin ramping in September, with AI revenue likely well ahead of our 80–90 billion in calendar 2028, versus our prior $36 billion estimate, assuming multiple gigawatt deployments across the four lead customers.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI discussed a rapid ramp-up of Helios, and the newly introduced ROCm .AI should make that process even easier. AMD matched NVDA in forecasting a $200 billion-plus server market spread across three tiers: headnode, agentic, and general-purpose servers, with agentic approaching 50% of the total addressable market in the out years.
Venice is ramping later this year and puts AMD even further ahead of INTC and ARM competitors. AMD did not commit to a share target beyond saying it would be greater than 50%, but we see upside to 36 billion estimate.
Overall, there were no major surprises from the day, but rather a consistent message of product leadership in servers and an argument that AMD is closing the gap in AI."

CHINESE MEMORY IS NO LONGER THE CHEAP ALTERNATIVE
China’s largest DRAM maker, CXMT, is reportedly charging more than Samsung’s roughly $1,240 price for comparable 64GB DDR5 server memory modules.
CXMT spent years competing as a cheaper, state-backed alternative. Now, AI data-center demand has tightened conventional memory supply, while Beijing has steered state-owned buyers toward domestic suppliers.
Reuters reports CXMT has secured a five-year agreement worth more than 3 billion with Tencent.
The company generated 8.6 billion IPO. New factories could more than double production capacity to over 600,000 wafers per month.
